My Dear Myfwany
Thank you so much for your consoling letter with statement as to how I stand in this belated & laborious appearance of my Penguin Book, which, however, has moved a stage further, thanks to you & very soon, now I hope will be selling on the Book Stalls. Do believe me I have no black looks for you, on the contrary I am full of pangs & sympathy & admiration for your energy in poking up the poor photographer-printer to get on with the job “with all speed”.
I have been through the list of coloured prints several times and as far as my memory permits I think it a fairly characteristic selection of my work between the year 1916-1945. The list might be strengthened by addition of 2 extra works in the [Purbeck series] 1945 class – either the two newest oils recently at Lefevres or these 2 : Lancashire Family / Red Cockerel. Both good I think, owned by E Knollys who I am sure would let you have prints of them. He has very good prints I know. I hope No.13 (Mrs Gorer’s) is still life before open window with shells. Well I leave it to you. My private preference is above.
I should like to know if my Book is included in the main group Sutherland – Piper – or something slightly different with other women. I have of course seen your Sea Anthology reviewed. I know I shall find it most interesting. I am working, though not so fiercely hard as your John. I am so very glad you have the K & A babies while Parents go on holiday. All is well again. Disaster averted indeed.
What a marvellous thing has happened to us all. Everything feels quite different now the bombing & fighting have stopped – the very air is different – the trees & sunshine know.
Must stop. My best love to you both & thank you so very much for your help & letter. Frances
