Dear Douglas
Many thanks for fixing up room for me at the Globe Inn. I can now give you a definite date Sat 8th July [August?] but don’t yet know what time I arrive – will let you know.
A request or command? From the “dear Lord Director Sir Kenneth Clark” to be interviewed for a Penguin book complete with 5000 words & illustrations keeps me here till about [date?] (curse it) but failing any further hold up I hope to be eating with you Sat night next week. Mrs John Piper is writing the Penguin. Fairly enterprising in wartime don’t you think.
I am sending you a small cheque what was meant to be your wedding present. Buy something for yourselves – that you fancy. Don’t thank me. You know perhaps that they have given me a pension. Not a very big one but it will keep me from starvation & it is nice to have something coming in regularly. All I need is another 50 yrs to enjoy it ! Good of you to say I can eat with you. Of course that will be very much nicer than at the Inn. We can share our rations.
No more we are yet in suspense evacuate or no, it keeps one keyed up. Love Frances
