Dear Mr Watson
I must thank you so much for your letter and for letting me see the three photographs illustrating John Piper’s article which you are publishing in HORIZON.
You do me an honour and I am very happy indeed about it. I specially like the two prints in the more recent idiom, preferring them to the Drawing of Sabrina’s Garden with its concession to clarity & coherence of an earlier date.
The original painting of Sabrina’s Garden with its 2 wooden figures is, incidentally my favourite of that vintage 1930-40. I wish I could send you a print but I think the Leicester Galleries ought to have one.
Another painting I am rather partial to is Wings over Water shown at the National Gallery & now at Leeds Art Gallery.
But unquestionably my high spot is the Man & Chicken & it takes a John Piper to say so – and see.
My thanks to you & him. Yours sincerely Frances Hodgkins.
I enclose the only 3 prints I have handy at the moment.
