My Dear Douglas
I hope you are not having hard thoughts of me not writing. I should have answered your Christmas greeting before now & thanked you as I should like to thank you for your welcome & honoured card which has been ever since on my mantel piece everybody’s friend. The real little Frenchman. Such a pet. I love him. He makes me sweetly dream I am back in France once more. I call him Etty [?] le Grand after the illustration & it was a real pleasure to receive it and it was lovely of you Douglas to send it to me with the nice words on it. Thank you so much: -
I wonder where you are. I hope you are well, as I, thankfully am, more or less, after a wildly cold uncomfortable winter one of the worst of my whole career. I had a card from May Smith and she mentioned that you had plans of returning to N. Z.
I am glad she is out there for a few years. It won't do her any harm in many ways. I envy her and wish I were younger & could make the venture. Europe is a good place to be out of.
I am writing this hurried to note to tell you I am having a Water Colour Show at Lefevres opening 4th April & am hoping that you'll will be there to wish me luck. I'll send you a card. It will depend on Hitler how long I'll be in London, only a few days I expect. Have you found the war a spur or otherwise? I wish I lived nearer & could get you to photograph my paintings.
I am one of the 4 British artists exhibiting at the Venice Biennale International this summer a roomful each - 25 pictures - a lot of eggs in one basket!
Love to you both & hoping to see you & best of luck to you. Frances Hodgkins
