Luce Dearest
Much cheered by your letter – come now – in time for Tea – a nice slice of cake – swallowed all too soon – but there are always a few crumbs left over. I am waiting for Miss Selby to roll up for her weekend. It is a long way to come just for one long summer day in the country but she loves it & goes back all the better & browner. This is the weather to make nice brown necks & faces. Jimmy is so proud – tell Hilary – he can’t walk straight. That he is going to be picked up & taken to the seaside that will suit him fine – he says. Biddy his Sister is going with me tomorrow to a beautiful house in Hampshire – Miss James who lives there – an old Tudor House full of treasure – is calling for us both in her car – as you did & I am going to stay there till Friday – painting & going for drives etc. Then back here to greet an old friend – pupil who is coming to stay for a week. After that I hope to go to Town & if Dates suit you dear Luce would love to have room or bed at Flat. What time I fix up my business of Studio moving – teeth extractions & one thing & another. The dentist do is a dire necessity & must be faced & quickly.
Miss James is a well known & much respected educationalist – in fact has a girls’ private school of her own at this fine old house – The Vyne in Hampshire, Basingstoke. Shall I ask her about Schools for Hilary or have you now settled on one.
Let me know to c/o Miss James as above any time up till Friday when I come back here. She might be helpful. She is a delightful woman with great artistic leanings hence her interest and friendliness towards my self & work.
I hope Paris is only “off” pro tem – it would be a pity to let it lapse altogether. I quite agree with you that you did well to postpone your visit. It will come off later & more successfully.
There she is so I must bustle around & get a meal.
Goodbye dear sweet generous Luce for what you send me. Your loving Frances
