Dear Miss Selby
I have shared your disappointment. I can’t say how sorry I was to get telegram number 2 saying definitely your holiday was “off” & that your precious fortnight was not to be spent in France. I am sorry I did not write earlier, hoping each day you might turn up. This has been a busy time with me – together with the rush of work for the Autumn Salon to be got off by next week – so please excuse my not replying to your letters – or wire - I was so sure you would be with us by the end of the week. What wretched bad luck being marked down at the eleventh hour. I do hope you will contrive to get off to the country for the remainder of your time.
I am likely to be here indefinitely. The place suits me. So come when you have a spare week or so – the journey is an easy one. There is a central heated Studio attached to this Hotel (besides my own) available one can work at flowers, models, still life – if the weather is bad. The weather is atrocious – deluge of rain & so cold so you have lost nothing as far as that goes.
It was extremely nice of you to send me the cheque I will put it against your prospective lessons which are now paid for thank you so much. Or will send you a Water Colour Drawing for the amount should you prefer it. Don’t bother about sending more money. I have given the Patron 100 frcs on your behalf & he is well satisfied hopes you will be better soon & come later on. He held yr room against all comers on the 16th.
The 16th Aug was unlucky for me. Another of my party arrived from Paris & left by the next train for America recalled by cable.
Please post parcel letter post so that it comes unopened - will refund stamps. No paper thanks. With many regrets & many thanks & hoping better health. Yours sincerely Frances Hodgkins
