Dear Mrs Field
I expect you know that at last all dear Frances’ things have been cleared up here in Corfe. It has taken a long time & Mrs John Piper came a month ago & took away the final few things left; mostly painting things, books & old portfolios of rough drawings etc. All her finished work went to her last exhibition. The Studio & cottage were furnished with the Newbery’s things which have now been cleared out for the property to be sold. Frances had the use of it all in Mr Newbery’s lifetime. He died a year ago & Mrs Newbery (over 90) is too ill to be moved to her daughter’s in Scotland. I felt I must write you a few lines to wish you & Mr Peter Field a Happy Xmas. I miss Frances very much, especially on Sundays when she used to come in for tea. I have been very busy all the year & only snatched a few week’s holiday last month when I was feeling rather played out. Now the cars are off the roads, owing to the petrol restrictions I shall have a quiet winter & some chance to work undisturbed – which I haven’t had for several years. The petrol restriction is hitting motorists very hard especially in the country. What a “Peace” it’s far more difficult to get things than during the war, higher taxation, & more & more restrictions. I have just had a visit from two great nieces who are Australians over here for a year on their first trip to Europe. They are thrilled with the English countryside & especially Dorset with its old-world villages & old churches tucked away in the heart of the country. It’s been a lovely autumn; England at its best – one thing the Labour government can’t ration!! Thank Goodness.
I hope you are well & will all have a happy Xmas. Yours sincerely Amy E Krauss
