Dear Mrs Field
I enclose a note I had from Mr Fairburn. After reading something that he wrote in the “Listener” [words obscured] I wrote to him, it was so characteristic (what a word) of her & I felt I could just see them talking together. I have just come back from Dunedin where I saw an exhibition of Fanny’s earlier paintings which were lovely & two modern ones – one owned by Mr Barron. What I really wrote about was to enclose this note of Mr Fairburn’s and to say that I wrote to Mr Wadman suggesting that he wrote to you and asked you to tell him of Frances and that you would be far more likely to know about her than I would. Thank you so much for writing about Frances to me. I was very fond of her. She was without doubt a great artist. Did I tell you that Fannie Melville (Spence) heard her (Frances) death announced with the 9 o’clock news. Fannie lives in Somersetshire. There is Fannie for you. Well I must go & post this. I was much interested in all that you had to tell me about Frances. Yours affect. Ethel A Cossins
