My dear Mrs Field
Thank you for your kind cable. This is a sad letter I am afraid, but had you seen Frances, you could not have wished her to live. The end came very suddenly. I had a wire saying she was suddenly critically ill & then another to say she had died at 12.40 (Tuesday). I think she must have already died when they sent the first wire. She expressed a wish in her will to be cremated. It has been arranged for Saturday morning at 11.30 at Weymouth. I have just been telephoning to Dorothy Selby and I suggested we should send a wreath from the family & she will get it in London for you all : otherwise the papers say “No flowers” & ask New Zealand papers to copy this notice in the Times & Telegraph. The B.B.C. has just announced it in the 9 o’clock news. Dorothy Selby & John Piper (an artist) are the Executors & they are dealing with all her work. She did very little in the last year or two and I think there are mostly drawings left & one or two pictures still at the Gallery. I am so glad she was able to see her Exhibitions there – I took her up to see it & we stayed with Mr (& Mrs) Macdonald the Director of the Gallery as I think I told you before. I will write again shortly. With very kind regards to you and Mr Field. Yours sincerely
Amy E. Krauss.
