My dear Percy
I have kept an eye open for all news concerning N. Territory & send on a paper with an articles from a medical man’s point of view that will interest you; it is a side not to be ignored. I sound every man I meet – some know nothing – care less – one or two – including Mr Rodney Cherry says it is not a climate for New Zealanders – if it is to be peopled Queensland will supply the population – and the money. I give you this for what it is worth – cattle ranching seems to be worth something. This is all I can gather at present – both hands are very full at present with my Show. Life is a swirl. It is a great success my dear! The crowds blowing in out of the streets – papers eulogizing – trams full – lifts overflowing – trumpets blowing & lots of butter at 2/6 a lb! Society in their best flocked on Monday to the F.V. Sold two skinny little pictures for £5 each – two of the ones I brought over – (the bead threaders that you harboured for me) next day £90 flew off the walls & the 3rd day another £60 – today nothin’ doin’ but the Nat. Gallery have ordered 5 or 6 to be sent up to the gallery on “appro” I await results. Folk say nobody – not even the great & only Longstaff has ever had such a show or made so much talk. Horderns’ have behaved nobly – the firm bought one picture & young Samuel two for £70. They have been so decent & civil & are delighted with the results, tho’ their faces were pretty long when they first opened the cases & saw a few ultra-ultras with broken glasses. It is such a comfort to be on a business footing – backed by business men. It is all spoon fed & playful compared to Melbourne – I wish I had been in their hands first. I wish you could be here before I leave Sydney – it is an enchanting spot – not many more so I should think. The Judge owns a launch & we spin round the Harbour when nothing else is doing. Vice Royalty honours me with a visit this afternoon so I must away & put blue corduroys. Hope things shape well & that you are hearing the right sort of news from Darwin. Will send on any items I pick up. Good luck dear boy & love to Ouida. From yr loving Frances Love to Esmond & all at York Bay.
