Brief Description
Produced in Bodinnick, Cornwall, where Hodgkins stayed from December 1931 to April 1932, this nocturne is part of a group of exhibition drawings produced during months when daylight hours were short. Hodgkins' lodgings overlooked the river Fowey, and she has utilised the paths of light that reflected across the river the town of Fowey on the opposite bank. A simple vase of flowers take on heroic proportions, the window ledge on which they would have sat becoming a table in the the landscape. A disembodied spray of laurel on the upper right floats against the water. The same motif appears in a more realistic setting in Wings over Water [Leeds].
