Brief Description
Rodney Wilson thought that The Yellow House was painted in France and the similarity with The Yellow Houseboat, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, gives a possible date of 1924, when the artist spent the summer at Montreuil-Sur-Mer. In fact, this watercolour is Hodgkins' interpretation of Van Gogh's famous painting of the Yellow House in Arles. Hodgkins may have passed through Arles on her way to Martigues at the end of 1924, but she may equally have taken the composition from the book of postcards in Jane Saunder's possession, which she often looked at.
