Brief Description
E H McCormick described this work as 'Peasant woman with four children grouped in foreground of ploughed field; row of trees indicated in background', which may be how it got its title. However rather than a child, the fourth figure appears to be a rag doll, clasped in her owner's hands. This is more easily viewed in an oil portrait (after Frances Hodgkins) of the single figure Girl with a Doll. Arguably the title 'peasant' may be a misnomer, for the woman is fashionably dressed.
