Brief Description
Hodgkins painted several sketches of the sheds around the bay from Port Chalmers. This scene includes the church of Iona in the distance. A work listed in Bulletin of NZ Art History v.5 (1977) p.20, p.24 (ill) exhibited in the Otago Art Society, 1894 cat no. 191, £3.3.0, was formerly thought to refer to this watercolour, but a close study of the photograph reproduced at the time of the exhibition shows that was a variant, (as yet unlocated) with a dark figure (possibly a mooring pole in the water) clearly visible in the left foreground. The ODT at the time described that work as: 'Miss Hodgkins is evidently making satisfactory progress with her study, as will be seen by an inspection of the exhibits now on view, of which we prefer No 191 (Old Boathouse, Port Chalmers), the subject being carefully rendered in a sound style.'
